Panto Day 2012: Wed 5th Dec

Pantomime has been a traditional part of the British arts calendar for over 300 years and with the season soon upon us, the nation is being invited to celebrate Panto Day on Wednesday 5th December.

Panto Day is a day to celebrate everything panto related, in any fitting way. Many theatres, actors, audiences and enthusiasts are already showing their interest in joining the celebrations, with Panto Day 2012 launching a number of new Panto Day Projects:

*A Day in the Life of Pantoland: Join us on Facebook (facebook.com/pantoday) and Twitter (@Panto_Day) as we go behind the scenes of Pantoland...

*Panto Advice Page: Read some pearls of panto wisdom from the best in the business!

Although only its second year, Panto Day has gone from strength to strength, with over 100 theatres and companies pledging their Panto Day support.

Panto Day Co-Ordinator Simon Sladen says:

"This is a crazy idea that I dreamt up last year whilst writing a conference paper on pantomime and its use of communities. For many, it simply wouldn't be Christmas without Pantomime. It’s an intrinsic part of our cultural heritage. It's survived due to its willingness to evolve; embracing the present whilst preserving the past.”

Panto fans are invited to join our online panto celebrations on 5th December by tweeting anything and everything panto related using the official hashtag #panto and contributing to our Facebook page: facebook.com/pantoday2012.

Simon adds:

"Having showcased the very latest in fashions, tastes, trends and technologies in its history, it seems only fitting that we should especially use social media sites like Twitter and Facebook to celebrate this wonderful performance genre.”

A full listings of Panto Day events can be found on this site at 'Panto Day: What's On'.  New for 2012, we also have a list of signed, captioned, relaxed and audio described panto performances and a page dedicated to panto blogs, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook pages.

Celebrate with us on Panto Day: Wednesday 5th December, we look forward to your posts!
